Contribute an article or essay to History.

Open History Magazine welcomes well-researched writing on the history from scholars, students, teachers and independent writers. We are interested in any region and any period, and in clear writing that a general reader can enjoy.

What we look for

  • Original work that has not been published elsewhere.
  • A clear argument or story, accurate facts and a readable style.
  • Sources named in the text or listed at the end, so readers can follow them up.
  • Articles of roughly 1,000 to 3,000 words. Shorter or longer pieces can be discussed first.
  • Images only if you have the right to use them, with credit and source given.

How to submit

Email a short pitch, or the finished article, to openhistorymagazine@gmail.com. Include your name, a one or two line bio and the era and region your piece belongs to. We will reply to say whether it suits the magazine and, if so, what edits we suggest.

Editing and rights

All accepted pieces are edited for accuracy, clarity and style, and we will agree changes with you before publication. You remain the author of your work. By submitting it, you allow History to publish it on this site. See our editorial policy and terms of use for more.
